The History of the Ginko Box Trio
“The beautiful Japanese papers are so inspiring. Japan is so inspiring.
This time, I imagined a trio of cylindrical boxes with sober, refined lines,
simply punctuated by the pointed lid and the pompoms: a definitely Japanese style.
This is an opportunity for me to pay tribute to Ginko Ogino, Japan's first official female doctor. Humiliated by the doctor who had to treat her for a so-called shameful illness (a gift from her fickle husband!), Ginko decided to become a doctor so that women could be treated. She graduated in 1882 and was licensed to practice in 1885, after many difficulties and petitions. Ginko fought against discrimination against women all her life.
Japan and Ginko are eternal sources of inspiration.
